Most families should explore the ACT in 10th grade, complete a current-format diagnostic by early 11th grade, take a first official test after the student has covered most tested math, and preserve one realistic retake before application or scholarship deadlines. The earliest last accepted ACT controls the schedule, not the latest general application deadline. Leave room for score processing; ACT says scores are typically released over a window and individual results can take longer.

Parent can own: fee and waiver planning, transportation, calendar reminders, a quiet practice space, and questions about household constraints.

Budget the whole testing path
